Basketball markets use the same arithmetic as any decimal market, but the scoring is far more frequent than in football, so lines are set in points and move in small steps. A half-point at the end of a line, as in −5.5, removes the possibility of a refund.

Moneyline
Worked example
A moneyline bet wins if the chosen team wins the game, however long it lasts. Here is a worked example. ₦2,600 on a home side at 1.48 returns ₦2,600 × 1.48 = ₦3,848, or ₦1,248 in profit. The two prices of a moneyline also show the margin: 1.48 and 2.65 imply 67.6% + 37.7% = 105.3%, about 5.3%.
Point spread
A spread bet adjusts the score before settlement. A favourite at −5.5 must win by six points or more; the underdog at +5.5 wins the bet by losing by five or fewer, or by winning. ₦1,900 on the favourite at 1.91 returns ₦3,629 if it wins by six or more and nothing otherwise.
A whole-number spread adds a third result. At −6, a win by exactly six points is void and the stake comes back; seven or more wins, five or fewer loses. Its price therefore sits between the prices of −5.5 and −6.5 on the same game.
Totals
A total bets on both teams’ points together. Under 221.5 at 1.88 with ₦2,300 returns ₦4,324 if the game finishes on 221 points or fewer. Quarter and half totals work the same way on a shorter period, with lower lines.
How overtime changes settlement
Overtime is the usual source of confusion in basketball settlement. Take a game tied 108–108 after four quarters that ends 117–114 after one extra period.
- Moneyline on the winner: settled on 117–114, so the winning side’s backers are paid.
- Total of 221.5: the final 231 points count, so over wins, although 216 points in regulation would have settled under.
- Spread of −5.5 on the winner: a three-point margin, so the favourite loses the bet.
- A 1X2 market on regulation time: 108–108 is a draw, and only the draw pays.
The rules section of any bookmaker states whether a given market includes overtime. Where the label is missing, moneyline, spread and totals usually include it, while three-way markets do not.
NBA betting guide for bettors in Nigeria
NBA games follow North American time. A 7:30pm Eastern tip-off is 12:30am WAT during US daylight saving time and 1:30am WAT from early November to mid-March. Late starts matter because injury reports and starting line-ups are confirmed close to tip-off, often after midnight in Lagos, and a missing star moves both the spread and the total.
