Over under betting in short
The short answer
- Over wins above the line; under wins below it.
- Half lines (0.5, 1.5, 2.5) never refund.
- Whole lines (1, 2, 3) refund when the total equals the line.
- Quarter lines split the stake across two neighbouring lines.
- Football totals count 90 minutes; basketball usually includes overtime.
An over or under bet does not depend on who wins the match. A 3–2 home win and a 2–3 away win both have five goals and settle every goals line identically. The market is about the tempo of a game rather than its result.

Half lines from 0.5 to 4.5
A half line cannot equal the total, so every bet on it has two possible results. The lines below are the ones most often listed for football matches.
Over 0.5 and under 0.5
The over 0.5 meaning in betting is “at least one goal”. Any score other than 0–0 wins it, which is why it is priced very short, for example 1.09: ₦5,500 returns ₦5,995. The meaning of under 0.5 in betting is the reverse, a goalless match, priced long at something like 7.40.
Over 1.5 and under 1.5
Worked example
The over 1.5 meaning in betting is two goals or more; one goal or none loses it, so 0–0 and 1–0 are under while 1–1 and 2–0 are over. Here is a worked example. ₦3,300 on that line at 1.33 returns ₦3,300 × 1.33 = ₦4,389. Under 1.5 is a match with at most one goal, often priced near 3.25.
Over 2.5 and under 2.5
Over 2.5 needs three goals or more: a ₦2,200 bet at 1.83 returns ₦4,026 after a 2–1. Under 2.5 needs two goals or fewer, so 1–1 wins and 2–1 loses; ₦1,600 at 2.02 returns ₦3,232. Which team scores the goals makes no difference.
Over 3.5, under 3.5 and over 4.5
The under 3.5 meaning in betting is three goals or fewer. Because most football matches stay below four goals, the price is short, around 1.36: ₦2,700 returns ₦3,672. Over 4.5 needs five goals or more and is priced long, for example 5.60.
Whole lines: when the stake comes back
A whole line adds a third result: if the total equals the line, the bet is void and the stake is returned.
On over 1, two or more goals win, exactly one goal refunds and no goal loses. Over 2 at 1.52 with ₦1,400 works the same way one step up: three goals or more return ₦2,128, exactly two goals refund ₦1,400, and one goal or none loses. The over 3 meaning follows the pattern: four goals win, three goals refund, fewer lose.
Quarter lines
Worked example
A quarter line splits the stake equally between the two half or whole lines next to it. Over 2.75 at 1.95 with ₦3,600 places ₦1,800 on over 2.5 and ₦1,800 on the line of 3. After exactly three goals, the 2.5 half wins ₦1,800 × 1.95 = ₦3,510 and the 3.0 half is refunded at ₦1,800, a total of ₦5,310. Four goals or more win both halves; two or fewer lose both.

Totals in basketball, baseball and team markets
In basketball, totals run into the hundreds, such as 214.5 points, and the line usually includes overtime, so a tied game that goes to an extra period adds points to the total. In baseball the line is in runs, such as 8.5, and extra innings normally count. Football totals stay on 90 minutes plus stoppage time; extra time and penalties are excluded unless the market names them. More on basketball lines is on the basketball markets page.
Team totals apply the same rules to one side’s goals. “Home over 1.5” needs the home team to score twice, whatever the visitors do. A team total is often the cleaner market when one side’s attack is the whole reason for the bet.
Checking a line before staking
Each line’s price implies a probability: 1 ÷ 1.83 is about 54.6% for the price quoted above. Comparing that with the share of each team’s recent matches that went over is a reasonable check, provided the sample covers more than a handful of games.
